A print showing the newly built town of Victoria on the island of Hong Kong. Victoria was one of the first settlements built in Hong Kong after it was ceded to the British by China after the end of the First Opium War, providing a valuable base for maritime trade. It now covers the Central district of Hong Kong. The colony was still in its infancy, as shown by the annotations at the lower edge of the print: "temporary court house" and "temporary church".
