First published by the War Office in 1921, this third edition is based on previous maps and aerial charts. Following WWI, the Holy City of Medina, relinquished from ottoman rule, formed part of Hejaz, the western region of Arabia. It had been under the direct control of the Ottomans from 1845, governed by an appointed official known as the Sharif of Mecca.
