This chart of Singapore was the result of the first detailed hydrographic survey conducted in the region. At the remarkably young age of 20, John Turnbull Thomson was appointed Government Surveyor in the Straits Settlement, and spent his first three years in the role mapping Penang and Province Wellesley.
