A folded printed sheet of leaves prior to binding; referred to as a signature after binding. Danish: Ark A pattern tooled on gilt edges of book. Gilding the top edge was desired not only because it looks attractive, but also because it makes the books easier to dust off. Danish: Forgyldt The inner margin of the leaves of a bound book; adjacent inner margins of facing pages when book is open. French: Marges intérieures
